Cracks are generally caused by sesonal movment of soils supporting the foundation. Most homes will suffer some sesonal movment. There is nothing that can be done to prevent this. However knowing that your house is occassionally moving does not mean that you have foundation problomes. Infact most house that move or settle only do so durring times of drout, or extended rainy seasons.
According to FHA guidlines they allow up to 1-240 or 1 inch in 240 inches of movment per structural componet. That means that unless your house is moving greater than 1 inch in 20 feet, you don't have any major foundation issues to correct.
