Brick Repair by BrickMagic started in 1997 With a child on the way. It seemed like the logical thing to do so I started BrickMagic. Having grown-up laying brick I felt I knew everything about the industry. Boy was I wrong. Not long after starting my buisiness I was asked to custom match mortar on a historic building in Fort Worth, Texas near I-35 and Rosedale. It was the "James E. Guinn Elementary" constructed in the 30's I thought it would be a snap.
After about 35 or 40 attempts to match the mortar, some with success and others complete failure, I set out to develope the perfect mortar matching system. You see in order to recreate certain blends we needed a surefire recipe that we could rely on everytime. It didn't take very long to realize that in order to recreate the same exact colors everytime and match an array of colors we were going to need to know what every blend would produce. In order to catagorize the results we utilized an icecube tray containing 16 slots, and decited that since each slot would be a different color, or shade and that there are 16 cups in a gallon that we would alter the shade by 1-cup at a time and the BrickMagic Custom Mortar matching system was born.
Many years have passed and we are still finding better way's to repair brick. Our newest brick repair method helps to ensure the stability of your brick. By installing a FlexRod into the horizontal joints of a crack we can prevent most movement and recracking. Here is how it works.
Most movement is transfered to a control joint through the brick and mortar. This is because the control joint acts like a weeker point in the brick wall. But in some cases cracks will appear either as stair step cracks or verticle cracks that travle through the brick. This is because the movement finds the weekest point in the brick prior to reaching the control joint and a crack begins.
By incerting the FlexRod into the wall horizontally at each crack, we are reinforcing the brick and allowing the movement to continue into the control joint. preventing most future brick repair issues. see figure below:
We are currently developing even better control systems for preventing mortar cracks.
One such system utilizes latex aditives with the mortar. It is our belief that by modifing the mortar with latex not only will it increase the adhession of the new mortar but it should help to increase the flexability of the new mortar, and therefore prevent recracking all together.
This system is still in the development stages. While we are testing it on various projects it won't be sold until late 2011.
